The NTFA has recently met with all division 1 and 2 clubs to finalise the introduction of Promotion & Relegation.

At the meeting clubs confirmed there was still overwhelming support to have Promotion & Relegation included in the NTFA for the Division 1 and Division 2 competitions.

However, based on feedback from clubs and noting the significant structural change that they have had to navigate and manage over the last 12 months it was proposed by the NTFA that Promotion and Relegation now commence during the 2026 season rather than during 2025. This was overwhelmingly supported by the clubs.

Therefore, any changes to the divisional 1/2 makeup of the competition due to Promotion and Relegation will occur for the 2027 season.

The final model for promotion and relegation that will be introduced for the 2026 season will now be consulted on with the clubs with matters including but not limited to:

• One team up, one down or two up two down

• How to manage any short-term yo-yoing between divisions, and the

• Financial sustainability of clubs

The rules around promotion & relegation policy will be finalised and presented to clubs for their final approval before the end of the 2025 season.

The NTFA is committed to working with our member clubs to ensure that the rules are in place for promotion and relegation for the 2026 season with clubs being promoted and relegated for the first time for the 2027 season.
